There have been over 1500 airplane crashes in the United States during the year 2004. Accidents and near misses are apparently reported ‘VOLUNTARILY’ to the Transportation Safety Board – so – who is watching the skies? It’s hard to say.
Airplanes are left unguarded in thousands of airports in the United States for hours, days and even weeks at a time – until a pilot – who may or may not be so familiar with his airplane that he could easily tell if someone had been tampering with it. For example – as an automobile owner you would be able to tell if someone had opened your car without a key – or gained accessed to the engine through the hood – an airplane owner cannot do that.
Most of the airports in the United States have no security systems whatsoever. Many have only a chain link fence or some signs telling you to keep out. Just recently the hangar at freight airport - Willow Run Airport in Michigan – burned to the ground. Who did it? Who knows?
In any case – if you are feeling safe these days just because you don’t fly in an airplane, I need to bring it to your attention that the Bush Administration has not done anything to guarantee that you won’t be killed by one anyway.
George W. Bush said one thing following September 11. He said we should not let the terrorists change the way we live – unfortunately, he has made it just that much easier for them to change the way we can die.
Here is an example of how seriously 'officials' are taking this threat : "We see car accidents with worse injuries coming in here every week," said Dr. Charles Zeman, director of trauma services at Northeast Regional Medical Center referring to plane crash victims brought to him for care.
The following is an incomplete list of airplane crashes for 2004. We have been averaging over 2100 a year. There is no clear way to get all of the data together because different government data systems report different numbers of accidents. It is clear, however, that there are many problems and with a guy like Bush in office, you can bet they won’t be solved any time soon.
