Johanns of Nebraska

Bush has chosen Governor Johanns of Nebraska to become the Secretary of Agriculture.
Here comes the Lawyer from Lincoln.
Don’t expect this Governor from a state with a population less than most American cities to make a big impact on the agricultural landscape this time around.
His responsibilities in Nebraska were not what you would consider heavy. Now that he will be joining the Federal Government he will be entitled to two lifetime pension plans. He’s won the lottery.
Mr. Johanns will likely take a light hand to the Department of Agriculture which has been steaming ahead under heavy government subsidy for decades.
Expect no reform of the cotton marketing industry.
Expect a rise in the amount of money destined for the pork, peach and popcorn marketing boards.
Expect pork bellies to swell up along with your food bill.
I think we can safely say that concerning the rank abuses, corruption and general incompetence exhibited by the USDA that at this time 4 years from now – if Mr. Johanns should last that long – there will no difference.
We’ll all be a little poorer for the experience and Mr. Johanns, like Mr. Ridge, Mr. Ashcroft, Ms. Whitman and Mr. Bush himself, will have run out on his elected office of Governor to graze the greener pastures in Washington, DC.
Mr. Bush is allowing every second rate Governor in the Union time on national merry-go-round.
Johanns didn’t fulfill his duty to his own state – why think he’ll do it for the nation?
