Let’s take a look at two political concepts of freedom.
Social life may be centered on freedom in the sense of freedom of choice, as an end in itself. This is the sort of pure political freedom that is taught in school books but does not exist in the real world. It has been called the liberal or individualist political concept of freedom and it is this form that the ‘New Republicans’ incorrectly use to wrongly mock the Democratic Party and – generally – anyone that isn’t doing business with them or of the mind to let them do whatever they please.
In this political concept of freedom culture and society have the ultimate goal of preserving free will in such a manner that every choice is a freedom to choose and these freedoms of choice are treated like so many little gods, with no other restriction but that of not disturbing the freedom of their neighbors. This can work and generally does work with things like the freedom of religion – but even here – excess can lead to the need to restrict or stop the practice of some religions. For example – any rituals involving murder or mutilation are in the United States not protected simply because someone invokes ‘Freedom of Religion’.
Some argument however, could be made about the cold hearted and dispassionate way that some people defend the ‘freedom or right to abortion’ while ignoring the social impacts of the need for such a ‘freedom or right’ and the pressures that have created it. Both sides in the argument have become locked in what appears to be a religious argument and yet poverty, ignorance and violence in our society are allowed to continue without being addressed by either side. The result has been – or the general practice has become that both sides use poverty, ignorance and violence to prove their point.
Stating such a woman’s right to choose equates a woman’s only choice in that freedom to be abortion gives birth itself to the idea of a ‘right to life’. The waste of time and energy dedicated to proving everyone’s ‘right to life’ is spent as the destructive situation caused by a ‘right to choose’ (now boiled down only to abortion) leaves little time to correct the causes of the problem in the first place.
Mr. Bush makes the situation worse by ignoring domestic matters by preferring to mess around in the affairs of other nations while ignoring the trespasses of those he chooses to call friend – like Saudi Arabia, Communist China and Malaysia.
Concerned mainly with the abstract this political concept of freedom fails to recognize the harder aspects of life in the modern world as has been noted. It does not deal with the severe need to address the more violent and destructive forces in our society and to solve the problems that may have caused the need for a special ‘freedom’ or ‘right’ to become necessary. A few may enjoy this sort of political freedom only through the oppression of all the others. That is, for example, what is happening with the older sects from the Mormon church which still insist on practicing multiple marriages and communal living. They are enjoying their freedom while the rest of us are placed under a yoke of protecting them and paying for the rearing of their children and ignoring the fact that they neglect and abuse their children who in turn enter our society ill prepared to conduct their lives responsibly.
By merely calling attention to the fact that this particular concept of political freedom does not have a direct means other than law and cooperation to deal with serious problems a person, like George W. Bush, can make an argument against it being effective and promote another concept of political freedom without admitting any of the benefits of a cooperative and lawful structure within society.
The political concept of freedom that George W. Bush seems attracted believes that social life must be centered, not on freedom of choice which is the essential freedom, but on a freedom that can be described as being the master of your own life and circumstances and is awarded to the individual from the outside – from the government. The right for him to do this has, according to his own words I believe, to be awarded to him by God and he has awarded it to the government which can now award it to you – and anyone in the way of our armies or police for that matter.
You are free only so much as they say and will not be free until they liberate you.
This political concept operates by professing autonomous freedom as being the preferred freedom but it imposes this idea through domination, intimidation and prefers to center power in the hands of a few who choose what form this autonomous freedom will take. This concept of political freedom is dictatorial and imperialist. This concept of political freedom changes over time to protect those who are awarding it and ‘keeping it safe’. The importance of the individual in this sort of government _expression of freedom is subjugated to the wonder of collective effort. Everyone must pull together to realize the common goal which is glorious and wonderful and to which we must all bow and worship. God has given us a gift – that gift is democracy, George W. Bush told us so – and he also told us that we need to spread that God-given gift – because that’s what God intends.
The dream that is being forced upon us leads to one government ruling over the whole world under one system of government. Everything and everyone is limited in the same way so everyone would be free in the same way according to the freedom that is in vogue today and the kind of freedom that is in vogue today is the kind that is being dictated by George W. Bush.
We can see today how human conditions are being shaped in the world to suit this perverted dream of conquest. We hold in economic slavery most of South America. We hold in economic slavery the Phillipines, Mexico and the few African nations that we work with. We encourage economic slavery to be continued by our rival and ally Great Britain through the sprawling skeletal empire known as the ‘Commonwealth’. The Commonwealth still, even after the collapse of the British Empire, exerts much more pressure and power than is generally realized.
We here in the United States are living in a time when a caste system is evolving. The politically connected and wealthy are forming opinions that they not only share with the rest of us but impose upon us as their right to do so merely because they have the means to do so.
The American voice becomes stifled as special interests involved with Communist China flood our nation with cheap imports of every kind. The American landscape becomes littered with industries that serve to enrich other nations – like Germany, Italy and especially Japan. The American resources become plundered by foreigners like Great Britain through the activities of British Petroleum and other huge mining interests. Our ability even to feed ourselves is impacted by large multinational agriculture corporations intent on selling one set of farm products produced by one method with one set of chemicals.
George W. Bush has repeated over and over – that the United States – rather than being our home and country – is destined to spread democracy and liberty over the face and the earth and bring the God given right of democracy to every living person on earth.
Meanwhile our national debt climbs, people can’t find jobs here, productive farmland gets turned into ghettos and our military spreads this form of democracy at the point of a gun.
